New Online Resource allows Users to Compare US States in 2,500 Ways

StateMaster, a state comparison site and free educational resource, has been
launched today, giving the general public an easy-to-use database which compares US
states on several thousand stats, everything from percent of toothless residents to
renewable energy consumption. Each statistic can be graphed and ranked, as well as
seen with a pie chart or map. This unique database brings together information on a
broad range of topics, and allows users to see where their state ranks when compared
to others in the nation.

The database is supported by a vast collection of information, with detailed state
profiles, thousands of maps and flags, and in-depth visualization technology which
gives new ways of looking relevant and current stats. Unlike anything before it on
the web, StateMaster is a one-stop site for all information related to US states.

Following the resounding success of NationMaster, the world's largest collection of
country-based information which received acclaim from the BBC, New York Times and
CNN, the makers of the site decided to translate their winning formula to US states.
"The best thing about StateMaster is its addictiveness," explains John Steinmetz,
Chief Writer and Content Manager of the site. "Often when people think of statistics
their brains shut down. But we've proven with NationMaster that data resources can
be interesting and fun; there are a lot of revealing, quirky and downright amazing
things people can find on our sites."

Take capital punishment for example. In 2005, the total number of state executions
was 60: 19 were executed in Texas and 41 were executed elsewhere in America. The
racial split, interestingly enough, was exactly the same: 19 Blacks were executed
and 41 Whites.

As a free educational resource, the StateMaster project gives users of all stripes
accurate and up-to-date information which sheds new light on their state and the
country at large.

StateMaster is run by Rapid Intelligence, a web publishing company focused on large
educational reference sites and technology for research. Other credits include
NationMaster, the world's largest statistical database for country comparisons,
which was given warm reviews by the BBC, New York Times, CNN and the Christian
Science Monitor, as well as Factbites, a search engine which gives encyclopedic
summaries as results.
